Why did I go natural?

Natural? Like afros from back in the day? I remember that being the first thing that came to my mind when I first heard about going “natural”. I mean if I’m being quite honest I really remember me going natural by accident. Yes you heard me right…Accident. So when I say accident this is what happened. I was still in college and you know how sometimes you go a while without a touch up. Well yeah that’s how I maneuvered my way into deciding to go natural.

I remember flat ironing my hair, doing roller sets, roller wraps, rods, and hot combing my edges. After several months of no perm… I felt like my hair was feeling better, thicker, and so was my scalp. I was curious about this “natural hair” I kept hearing about. So I decided to keep the relaxer off of my hair and see what would happen.

“I mean if it is how it grows out of my head isn’t that better?” Is what I kept thinking. So I decided to do some research about being natural. The main thing I kept seeing were the effects of the ingredients in a relaxer. How it could damage my hair, scalp, and this is random but an ingredient called sodium hydroxide (which is one of the culprits) can disintegrate an aluminum can to nothing. I felt bamboozled. I was shocked that I was even allowed to use this concoction at all. I committed that day to becoming natural and decided to keep it that way.

  1. Great post! I completely understand the shock. I too went natural by accident. It was my first day of cosmetology school and I saw so many ladies with beautiful curly and straight natural hair with so much life. I took a look in the mirror at my thin, limp hair and from the day on I decided that was my last relaxer. I have been loving every moment since.

  2. Your hair styles are always so pretty. I know I need to stop with the relaxer, but not sure on what to do without it. Will keep following you and get ideas.😆
