How I manage 3 different hair types under 1 roof.

So you may or may not know that I am the mom of 2 girls. Yes, we have a toddler and a tween. They keep us busy whether it’s chasing the 2 year old around the house or trying to keep up with the trends that the 10 year old is on. But let me tell you what keeps me the busiest. Wash day! Oh yes this is an eventful day for us! Why might you ask. Well all 3 of us have different hair types that require different attention and different products. (unless we’re out of the product and in that case we make do with what we have) But when we all have our products that work best on our hair type we use specific collections on each person for wash day. McKenzie used Aunt Jackies, Emary used Mustela, and I use Mielle. The past few months I have started to use Mielle on all 3 of us and it’s doing great so far. So well that I have decided to change them over to this brand. Finding a product that works across the board for all of us has helped with wash day a lot! This post will explain how I did wash day when we all used different products though.

The toddler has 3C type hair, the oldest has 4A & B and I have a mixture of all type 4 (A,B & C) hair but mostly 4b. Yes my hair is all over the place 🤦🏾‍♀️. So wash day is an event for us. Whether it’s 1,2, or all 3 of us needing to get our hair washed and styled this day can be a lot.

So a couple of things that help me manage with different hair on wash day are making sure to have the products organized together in bins where it is easy to grab, use, and replace for the next wash day. Another thing that helps is by starting earlier in the day. With my oldest being very tender headed the detangling process can be a tough job and take a while so I like to have time for breaks and not run into bed time. We like to finish and still have some of the day left to do other things. I mean who wants to go straight to bed after you get your hair done…we don’t! To make it fun for my oldest I have her look at hairstyles while her hair is being conditioned. Instead of me always choosing I have started to give her the option with the hope of giving her a feeling of importance. As she’s getting older we’re letting her express herself more. To help with ideas I have created a board on Pinterest where she and I have saved cute hairstyles for girls and of course she looks on google.

As for the little one she has the easiest wash day of us all. We wash and condition during bath time then I oil her scalp once she’s out. We do have to have entertainment since we can’t sit still but she is not tenderheaded so that helps me style her hair much faster. We might do a couple of ponytails or french braids. She has 3C hair so it’s also not as coily as her sister or my hair so detangling is a breeze.

As for my hair if I’m not doing the girls hair I start earlier in the day. If I have to wash one or both of the girls hair I wash my hair once the oldest has conditioner on her hair. I condition my hair while I style her hair then once I finish her hair I pick back up with my own. I have the oldest clean her products up, that I won’t need, and put them back in the bin. Then after I finish, I organize my items in the bin and put them away.

These are the things I do to make wash day better with my girls and our 3 different hair types. Overall I just make sure to start early, have my products organized where the oldest or I can get to them and store them when we finish and I make sure to stagger our wash day steps especially if all 3 of us are needing a wash day. No lost time in between! I hope this helps someone with their washday! 💜

  1. Hey Shan! This is awesome! I dare not try to wash 3 heads in one day! Lol. However, you have given me a little hope. Like you, there are 3 different hair types in my house. Phew! Thank you for sharing with us and educating us! I’m going to give a new brand a try! How often do you wash you all’s hair? Thanks!

    1. 😂You’re welcome! I wash every week to 2weeks depending on how hot it is outside(sweating and stuff) and how I did their hair. Sometimes I might re-style big girls hair for the 2nd week…I just restyled her hair for this week…I’ll post it… oh and thank you for stopping by too💜😊
